1. Introduction

At MUMROOT CIC, the safety and wellbeing of every individual we work with are our highest priorities.
We are committed to creating and maintaining a safe environment for single mothers, children, volunteers, and staff, where everyone feels valued, respected, and protected from harm.

This policy outlines our approach to safeguarding, preventing abuse, and ensuring accountability across all our activities and partnerships.


2. Purpose of this Policy

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • Protect beneficiaries (particularly vulnerable women and children) from harm or abuse.
  • Provide clear guidance to staff, volunteers, trustees, and partners on safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Promote a culture of openness, safety, and mutual respect within MUMROOT CIC.
  • Ensure that all safeguarding concerns are handled swiftly, fairly, and in compliance with UK law.

3. Our Commitment

MUMROOT CIC is committed to:

  • Upholding all relevant UK legislation and statutory guidance, including the Children Act 1989, Care Act 2014, and Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018).
  • Creating a zero-tolerance environment for abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
  • Ensuring all staff and volunteers complete appropriate safeguarding training.
  • Encouraging anyone with concerns to report them immediately without fear of retribution.

4. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • All MUMROOT CIC employees, trustees, and volunteers.
  • Contractors, donors, and partner organizations.
  • Anyone representing or acting on behalf of MUMROOT CIC.

It covers all forms of abuse, including but not limited to:
physical, emotional, sexual, financial, and psychological abuse, as well as neglect, bullying, harassment, and exploitation.


5. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL):
    The DSL is responsible for overseeing the implementation of this policy, managing incidents, and liaising with statutory agencies.

  • Trustees:
    Ensure the organization meets its safeguarding obligations and reviews the policy annually.
  • Staff & Volunteers:
    Must complete safeguarding training, follow reporting procedures, and promote a culture of safety and inclusion.

6. Recognising Abuse

Signs of abuse may include (but are not limited to):

  • Sudden changes in behavior or mood
  • Unexplained injuries or withdrawal
  • Fearfulness or anxiety
  • Financial irregularities
  • Inappropriate relationships or control by another individual

If any such signs are observed, they must be reported immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.


7. Reporting Concerns

Anyone who suspects or witnesses abuse must report it immediately.

How to Report:

  • In urgent cases, contact 999 (if a life is in danger) or 101 for non-emergency concerns.
  • You may also report directly to your local authority safeguarding team.

All reports will be treated confidentially and investigated promptly. Retaliation against whistleblowers is strictly prohibited.


8. Recruitment and Training

  • All staff and volunteers will undergo background checks (DBS) where applicable.
  • Comprehensive induction and refresher training in safeguarding will be mandatory.
  • Regular workshops and awareness programs will be conducted to maintain standards.

9. Data Protection and Confidentiality

All personal information related to safeguarding incidents is handled in compliance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
Information is shared only when it is lawful and necessary to protect individuals.


10. Policy Review

This Safeguarding Policy will be reviewed annually or following any major safeguarding incident or legal update.
Revisions will be approved by the MUMROOT CIC Board of Trustees.
